KU LEUVEN

In the current research of Lab4Food (University of Leuven - Campus Geel) several aspects regarding the use of insects as a new raw material or ingredient for food and feed and as biobased chemicals are investigated. We perform research on the relationship between the rearing and processing methods and their microbiological and nutritional quality. Since the barrier to consume insects is high in the Western world, we also develop new foodstuffs in which insects are unrecognizably incorporated. In addition, the potential of insects as an ingredient in animal feed is explored. Furthermore, we extract proteins, fats and chitin and study their properties and potential application as an additive for food and feed. Houbensteyn Groep
Houbensteyn Groep is active in food and energy production. Our food production involves rearing pigs from embryos to adults; green energy – heat and electricity – is produced from pig manure and feed offal.

NoviPig Merselo
NoviPig Merselo is a young, innovative company that specializes in the breeding of young pigs. The company is located in Merselo/Venray in the province of Noord-Limburg — the center of the protein innovation (EiwitRijk) region of the Netherlands.

Het Pluimhuis
Poultry is one of the better animal proteins when it comes to the environment. The carbon footprint of poultry farming is substantially lower than that of the livestock. However, this footprint must be reduced even further and animal welfare improved.

We design, integrate, and install intelligent material handling systems to improve efficiency and productivity. New Generation Nutrition BV
New Generation Nutrition BV would like to build a flourishing market for edible insects by setting up a network and knowledge base on the one hand, and developing appealing products with “insects inside” and high added value – products that will become “specialties” in select niche markets – on the other hand. NGN wants to introduce insects to the world as a new source of nutrition that can help provide sustainable security in food and feed. Because insects are currently still such an undiscovered source of nutrients, NGN believes their potential extends beyond food and feed, with promising biotech and pharmacological applications.

Gemeente Venray
Located in the southern region of the Netherlands, Venray County covers 146 square kilometers (90.72 sq. miles) and has a total population of 43,000 in its 14 towns. Newtricious R&D is a Dutch Life Sciences company that develops the new generation clinically proven food ingredients and specialized nutrition. It is Newtricious’ mission to contribute to a better world, through the development and valorisation of unique scientific knowledge on products for the prevention and early treatment of chronic illnesses. Our domain is when it is still too early for medicines, but with an urgent need for intervention – based on scientifically proven health benefits.

Feed Design Lab

Feed Design Lab (FDL) is the research and education center for innovation and sustainability in the feed industry. Located in the port of Wanssum, in the center of EiwitRijk (“the protein empire”) Venray, FDL and opened its doors on April 4th, 2014. This unique cooperation project between businesses, institutions of higher learning, and governments totals 65 partners. Open innovation and sharing knowledge form the basis of Feed Design Lab. By working together on innovation and by sharing this knowledge, Feed Design Lab contributes to the ambition of achieving a sustainable production chain.

GREENPORT VENLO

The Innovation Centre Greenport Venlo is the driver of innovation in the region and a network partner for the development of innovative concepts, products, and services for entrepreneurs in the Venlo region. It was founded by nine partners and is run by four entrepreneurs, in cooperation with various organizations and networks. Programme managers work on projects in the field of Agrifood, Logistics, Industry, and Biobased products, mainly with SMEs (small-medium enterprises).

Thielen Consult

Thielen Consult is the partner for companies and organizations in the food and feed chain. Together with our customers we aim to develop safe and fair food and feed. Thielen Consult guides companies through the legal requirements and various processes for certification and registration involved in bringing products to the market, and in complying with new regulations for existing products.

Louis Bolk Institute

The Louis Bolk Institute is an independent international knowledge institute for the advancement of truly sustainable agriculture, nutrition and health. We conduct scientific and practice-driven research for farmers, governments, district water boards, nature conservation organisations, businesses and health funds. Our systems approach and close collaborations with farmers, health practitioners and companies enable us to develop relevant expertise and solutions that work in practice. This way our work contributes to the sustainable health of humans, animals, plants and soils. The Louis Bolk Institute is located in Driebergen, the Netherlands, and has about 45 employees.

Tasty Bugs is a young and dynamic company focused on the use of insects in feed and food. We hope to show as many people as possible how important insects are for the future. Insectsforall

Insectsforall is a young company focused on the use of insects as food. We love to promote the eating of insects as a sustainable protein source by giving presentations and tastings.

Greentechlab

Technical issues within the agricultural and food sector can be resolved by GreenTechLab. This can be done through research, process analysis, engineering, prototyping or further development of an existing process or product. We target innovation questions which are usually raised at the beginning of an idea-to-market process. GreenTechLab works closely with ‘future technical talents’ such as students, as well as faculty and staff members from Fontys University of Applied Sciences.

De Groene Vlieg

Established in 1980, De Groene Vlieg (The Green Fly) has been part of the HLB group since September 2014 and employs over 100 people. We focus on pest control in open field agriculture and horticulture through the application of biological agents and soil analysis at individual field level. All of our environmentally friendly services are tailored to the individual wishes and needs of our clients.

For more than 30 years Mush Comb has specialized in vertical farming and growing concepts. Having started in the mushroom business where we deliver turnkey concepts, engineering, machinery, equipment and climate control, we have expanded further into innovative growing concepts for exotics and larvae. In 2017, we designed and built a new farm for breeding black soldier flies.
