Insect Protein Innovation Platform
Insect Rearing for Food, Feed, and Pharma

WHAT IS IPIP?

The Insect Protein Innovation Platform (IPIP) is a collaboration between local and regional government in the Dutch province of Noord-Limburg, local entrepreneurs, and higher education institutions designed to stimulate innovation in insect protein as a sustainable alternative to livestock, fish, and vegetable proteins.

The region is ideally suited to this task, boasting expertise in three areas essential to developing, sustaining, and transporting innovations in food and feed:

OPPORTUNITIES

FEED

The global feed market currently consists of fishmeal, fish oil, soybeans, and other grains. Rising prices, controversial fishing practices, unsustainable farming methods, and reliance on feed from abroad are all putting pressure on farmers, feed manufacturers, and the pet food industry to develop alternative feed sources.

Challenges

LEGISLATIVE BARRIERS

EU legislation currently only allows insects only to be sold in small amounts as a novel food or to the hobby pet market (birds, reptiles, etc.). Efforts are being made by ipiff, Venik, and other organizations to effect changes in the law. The European Commission is paying special attention to the results of the EC-funded research project PROteINSECT.

JOIN US

We are convinced that the global insect market is going to be big. The population’s demand for protein will only continue to grow, and this demand cannot be met sustainably given current farming methods and environmental conditions. We also recognize that in Europe we are far too dependent on soybean and other feed crops from abroad, and we need more local alternatives to decrease this dependence.

The southeastern region of the Netherlands is home to entrepreneurs, expertise, and companies that will not only allow us to compete in the insect sector but to be a leader in it.  Pooling our knowledge and resources will ensure a prominent position in insect production, processing, and distribution.

We are looking for additional partners in the following areas:
- Food and Feed
- Processing Pharmaceutical, medical
- Chemical technology
- Pet Food Supply
- Aquaculture
- Construction (for the building of the facility)
- Internal Logistics
- Factory Automation
- Waste Management
- Insect Breeding
- Research
